Thomas H. Johnson Born Sept. 25, 1853 Norway Died Aug. 6, 1936 Eden Township, IA. Immigrated 1869-70 at the age of 16. Entered US at Battery Fort, called Castle Garden. By about 1881 Tom had made his way to Silver Lake Township, Worth County Iowa and gone to work for Nils and Mary (Anderson) Hauge on their Farm.


Mary (Anderson) Hague - Johnson

Born Nov. 15, 1863 at Perry, Wisconsin. Gunild Maria (Mary) is the daughter of Anders and Taran Halstiensien. (see Marys Parents below) At age 16 abt. 1876 she marries Nils Hauge b. June 8, 1850, 13 years her senior. His parents are beleived to be John A. and Aslianne Hauge. In 1883 Nils drowns in DEAD MANS LAKE south-west of their farm. He leaves Mary and two children Andrine age 25 mos. and Albert age 3 mos. 6 months later, February 26, 1884 Thomas H. Johnson marries Mary (Anderson) Hauge. They have eight children. She died from complications of Gall Bladder surgery Jan. 29, 1929 at Mason City, Iowa hospital at the age of 65 years 2 months and 14 days.

Clara b. July 21, 1889; m. Carl Peterson; d. Dec. 25, 1911

Martin T. b.Sept. 26, 1891 Lake Mills, Iowa appears on 1920 census Wheaton, Traverse County in the home of Jacob Poppinga as a farm hand m. Martha Mae Poppinga March 15, 1920 Wheaton Minnesota. 3 sons Lewis - John - Richard and 1 daughter Ethel; d. October 15, 1955 Richmond, Wayne Co. IN. Buried, Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, IN. Martin had lived in Richmond 24 years and resided at 330 North 4th Street. A factory stands there now. Reverend Richard Simen Officiated.

Marys Parents

Anders and Taran (Johnsdatter Johnsurd) Halstiensien

Anders Halstiensien b. May 18,1831 and baptized June 12, 1831 at Hedalen, Valdres, Norway. Married Oct. 11, 1852 Taran (Johnsdatter Johnsurd) b. Nov. 30, 1825 and baptized Jan. 1, 1826 at Southern Aurdals Parish Norway. The daughter of John Johnson Braqerise & unknown first name Gulborg Gudbrandsdatter.

Anders and Taran immigrated to America in May 1856 with two daughters, Else b. 1853 & Gunild b. 1855 Tarans sister Olava,their parents and Anders sister Kari. They headed for Iowa County, Wisconsin near Spring Green. On Feb. 12, 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin Anders now Andrew Halstensen was mustered into Company F, 2nd Regiment of the Wisconsin Calvery. He had enlisted Jan. 20, 1864 at Dodgeville, Wisconsin for 3 years. He was 32 years old, eyes blue, hair brown, complextion light, height 5'8". On April 24, 1864 "Andrew Holsteinsen" "Died at Regiment Hospital Vicksburg of Disease" Records show Death totals of 16 killed in action; 4 died of wounds; 8 died from accidents and 265 from disease! Taran married Lewis Olsen who later changes his name to Lars Westland. She dies April 25, 1891.
